What Is HVAC Lifting & Installation?

HVAC stands for Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning. On an offshore platform, HVAC systems are essential for maintaining comfortable, controlled and safe conditions inside living quarters, control rooms, electrical rooms and other enclosed facilities.

When an offshore HVAC unit needs to be replaced, the challenge is not simply installing the new equipment. The HVAC unit must first be transported to the platform, lifted to the correct elevation, moved through restricted areas and positioned accurately for installation. On many offshore platforms, the equipment may be located on a rooftop or another elevated area where the existing platform crane cannot reach.

This is where HVAC lifting and installation becomes an important specialist lifting requirement.

Offshore HVAC units can be heavy, large and difficult to access. Existing cranes may have insufficient lifting capacity, limited reach, or may not be positioned close enough to the installation area. In some situations, bringing in a large crane barge or liftboat can be technically possible but unnecessarily expensive for only a few lifts.

Thunder Cranes provides temporary and portable lifting solutions designed specifically for these restricted offshore environments.

How Thunder Cranes Supports HVAC Installation

Thunder Cranes approaches HVAC lifting as an engineered lifting and access problem, rather than simply supplying a crane.

The process begins with a site survey and lift plan to understand the platform structure, available working space, lifting radius, access limitations, load path and installation requirements. From this information, the appropriate portable modular crane and rigging arrangement can be selected.

Where space is restricted, Thunder Cranes can install a compact modular crane close to the HVAC installation area. For example, the TC05 Stiff Leg crane was used on a Malaysian offshore platform where two HVAC units were located on top of the living quarters, with no existing rooftop lifting equipment. The crane was installed within a restricted area between the living quarters and helideck using a customised footing and sandwich-clamp arrangement.

The lifting process can also be divided into several stages when direct access is impossible. HVAC equipment can be transferred to the platform’s main deck, moved or skidded to a suitable staging location, and then lifted vertically by the temporary modular crane to the final installation level.

Thunder Cranes can support:

  • Site survey and lift planning
  • Portable offshore crane rental
  • Customised modular crane rig-up
  • HVAC equipment lifting
  • Skidding and equipment positioning
  • Final lifting to elevated installation areas
  • Offshore lifting operations and crane support

This approach can provide a more practical and cost-effective alternative to mobilising a large barge crane or liftboat, particularly when the project involves only a limited number of lifts.

Why HVAC Replacement Can Be Difficult Offshore

For someone unfamiliar with offshore operations, the problem can be explained simply:

The HVAC unit needs to go up — but the crane may not be able to reach it.

An offshore living quarter may have HVAC equipment installed on the roof, while the available platform crane operates from a much lower deck. The surrounding structure, helideck, equipment and limited deck space can also restrict where a temporary crane can be installed.

There may also be no suitable position for a conventional mobile crane. A crane vessel or liftboat could provide the required reach, but mobilising such equipment for a small number of HVAC lifts may not make commercial sense.

This is why a small, portable modular crane positioned close to the work area can be an effective solution.

A Simple Way to Understand HVAC Lifting

Think of the operation as a simple journey:

SUPPLY VESSEL → PLATFORM → STAGING AREA → TEMPORARY CRANE → ROOFTOP → HVAC INSTALLATION

The existing platform crane may handle the first part of the journey. Skidding can then move the HVAC unit into the correct position, while a temporary Thunder Cranes modular crane completes the final vertical lift.

On the Malaysian HVAC project, this staged approach allowed the units to be transferred to the main deck, skidded to a temporary loading area and then lifted to the rooftop by the TC05 crane. The temporary crane rigging and HVAC lifting work were completed within three days.

A Smarter Approach to Offshore HVAC Installation

HVAC replacement is essential for maintaining suitable living and working conditions offshore. When existing lifting equipment cannot safely or efficiently reach the installation area, the answer does not always have to be a larger crane vessel.

Sometimes, the better solution is to bring a smaller crane directly to the work area.

Thunder Cranes provides portable and modular lifting solutions for restricted offshore environments, helping clients overcome limited access, challenging lifting positions and insufficient existing crane capability.

When the HVAC is out of reach, Thunder Cranes brings the lifting capability to it.
