Offshore platform decommissioning is the process of safely taking an offshore oil and gas platform out of service and preparing its equipment and structure for removal, reuse, recycling or disposal.

When a platform reaches the end of its useful life, the work can involve much more than removing the main structure. Production equipment, generators, pumps, wellhead equipment, living quarters, lifeboats, helidecks, flare equipment and other modules may need to be disconnected and removed first.

A typical decommissioning project can involve several stages:

Prepare → Disconnect → Lift → Transfer → Reduce Weight → Remove

Equipment is isolated and disconnected before being lifted from the platform to a supply vessel or another designated location. This process is sometimes described as reverse installation because equipment is removed in the opposite sequence to how it was originally installed.

Removing equipment before the main structure is lifted can also reduce the overall weight of the topside. This process, known as weight shedding, can help bring the remaining structure within the lifting capacity of a heavy-lift vessel.

The process begins with a detailed assessment of the platform structure, lifting requirements, equipment weights, available deck space and lifting radius. A suitable modular crane configuration is then engineered around the project requirements.

The crane can be transported offshore in manageable components, assembled on the platform and load tested before lifting operations begin.

Once operational, the modular crane can support the removal of equipment and modules, helping transfer them from the platform to supply vessels or other designated areas.

A permanent platform crane may not always be suitable for decommissioning work. It may have insufficient lifting capacity, limited reach or may no longer be operational.

Instead of relying entirely on a large crane vessel, lifting can be performed from the platform itself. This can help reduce dependence on heavy-lift vessels and support vessels during preparation work, while allowing decommissioning activities to continue even when weather conditions temporarily prevent vessel-based lifting.

One of the key applications of modular cranes during decommissioning is weight shedding. By removing equipment and modules individually, the overall weight of the topside can be reduced before the final heavy-lift operation.
