What Is Extension Deck Installation?

Extension Deck Installation is the process of installing a temporary modular steel deck on an offshore platform to create additional usable space for equipment, materials and contractor packages.

Offshore platforms often have a major limitation: there simply is not enough deck space.

During operations such as Plug & Abandonment (P&A), well intervention, workovers and facility upgrades, several pieces of equipment may need to be positioned on the platform at the same time. Existing walkways, emergency routes and working areas can quickly become congested, making equipment movement more difficult and potentially creating additional safety challenges.

The TC Extension Deck provides a practical solution by creating additional platform footprint without requiring a permanent structural expansion.

The system consists of modular steel decking installed on Thunder Cranes’ TC Beams. For a TC90 crane configuration, the extension deck can provide approximately 10.6 m x 7.6 m of additional deck area and support up to 56.5 metric tons of equipment. The beams can also extend beyond the existing platform perimeter, allowing the deck to cantilever approximately 15 feet beyond the platform edge where the engineered configuration permits.

In simple terms:

The platform is too small → install an Extension Deck → create more usable space.

Why Is Additional Offshore Deck Space Important?

Space on an offshore platform is extremely valuable.

Equipment such as power units, air compressors, offices, work packages and intervention equipment may all need to be staged close to the work area. If there is insufficient space, equipment may need to be moved repeatedly whenever another operation begins.

This is commonly referred to as equipment shuffling.

For example, during a rigless well intervention operation, a workover or pulling unit may need to move from one well to another. Equipment placed in the path may have to be relocated before the unit can move.

More equipment movement means:

More handling → More time → More lifting → More disruption.

The TC Extension Deck creates a dedicated staging area so equipment that does not need to move frequently can be positioned away from the main working area.

Thunder Cranes specifically identifies reduced equipment shuffling and quicker well-to-well transitions as operational advantages of the extension deck.

How Does the TC Extension Deck Work?

The TC Extension Deck is designed as a modular system, meaning it is assembled from individual components rather than transported as one large permanent structure.

The deck sits on TC Beams, which are engineered to transfer the deck and crane reactions into suitable structural areas of the offshore platform.

The system can be used together with a Thunder Cranes modular crane, such as the TC90, or in certain situations the TC Beams and Extension Deck can be provided as a standalone package when additional temporary platform space is required.

The beams can also be configured to extend beyond the existing platform edge. This allows the Extension Deck to create usable space over an area that previously had no platform deck beneath it.

This is particularly useful when the available platform footprint is too small for the equipment required for an offshore project.

How Thunder Cranes Assists With Extension Deck Installation

Thunder Cranes provides the Extension Deck as part of an engineered offshore lifting and space-management solution.

The process begins by understanding the platform and the work that needs to be performed. This includes assessing the available structural support, equipment weights, required deck area, crane arrangement, access requirements and operational loads.

Thunder Cranes can then develop the appropriate TC Beam and Extension Deck configuration.

Support can include:

  • Platform and site assessment
  • Engineering and structural calculations
  • Extension Deck configuration
  • TC Beam installation
  • Modular deck assembly
  • Crane and deck integration
  • Equipment staging planning
  • Load distribution planning
  • Offshore installation support
  • Lifting and operational support

The deck is designed to distribute equipment loads through the TC Beams and into the platform’s primary structure rather than concentrating large package loads directly on a small area of the existing platform deck. This helps address point-loading concerns associated with heavy equipment.

Equipment placement is also planned according to weight distribution, with heavier equipment positioned closer to the primary structural support and lighter equipment toward the outer or cantilevered area.

Safety and Operational Benefits

Creating more space is not simply about fitting more equipment onto a platform.

It can also help create a more organised working environment.

The Extension Deck provides a stable surface with features such as handrails and a non-slip surface, while allowing equipment to be staged away from important walkways and emergency access routes.

The additional space can help:

  • Reduce platform congestion
  • Keep emergency routes clearer
  • Reduce unnecessary equipment movement
  • Provide dedicated equipment staging areas
  • Improve access around working areas
  • Distribute heavy equipment loads
  • Support more efficient offshore operations

Create Space Where You Need It

The TC Extension Deck is more than an additional steel platform. It is a temporary offshore space solution designed around the lifting, structural and logistical requirements of the project. By combining modular deck sections with engineered TC Beams, Thunder Cranes can help create additional usable space on platforms where the existing footprint is insufficient. The result is a more organised platform, fewer unnecessary equipment movements and a practical way to stage equipment closer to where the work is taking place.

When the platform doesn’t have enough space, don’t let space limit the project. Create the space you need.

Thunder Cranes provides engineered Extension Deck Installation solutions to help clients overcome offshore space constraints while supporting lifting, equipment staging and complex intervention operations.
